“La bergère” an oil canvas was restituted in 2016 from the University of Oklahoma. Photo provided by Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.
A leader in restitution advocacy, the Holocaust Remembrance and Restitution Foundation puts great emphasis on the need to return stolen artifacts and antiquities that are of substantial cultural and historical importance. The Foundation also advocates for the monitoring of groups that currently plunder cultural items and sell them around the globe.
After a year of activism on the Foundations behalf, “La bergère” (Camille Pissarro, 1886) a French Impressionist painting that hung in the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma, was officially restituted back to its original heir, Dr. Léone-Noëlle Meyer. This case and its outcome was unprecedented within the international art and restitution communities and garnered worldwide publicity and acclaim. This case, amongst others, stands as an example of the Holocaust Remembrance and Restitution Foundation’s accomplishments and abilities to create impact and tangible change.
